Background
C. M. Jewell & Associates Pty Ltd was commissioned
by the banking group to undertake audits of two drum reconditioning
sites in which they had a financial interest. The sites
had been in operation for many years, and soil contamination
was evident.
Hydrogeological Environment
Fill and alluvium overlying Wianamatta Shales.
Objectives and Scope
A Stage 1 study, comprising historical review, geological,
hydrogeological and drainage appraisals, and a walkover
assessment was completed for both sites. A sampling plan
for Stage 2 was prepared.
Subsequently a detailed Stage 2 study involving soil sampling,
groundwater monitoring borehole drilling and sampling, and
wide ranging laboratory analysis was completed.
Concurrently with the Stage 2 sampling, a Health and Safety
review of process operations on the active site, and a review
of options for controlling air emissions from the drum furnace
were completed.
Detailed recommendations and costing for site remediation
were then prepared.
