Background
Wollo Water Development Project, Ethiopia. This project
grew out of the requirement to provide emergency water supplies
for feeding centres set up by the Ethiopian Government and
NGOs during the famine of 1984-86. Once this immediate need
was satisfied, the priority shifted to organisational development
and training within the Ethiopian Water Works Construction
Authority, and to provision of safe and reliable water supplies
for towns and villages.
Services Rendered
As leader of a water development team and adviser to the
Ethiopian Water Works Construction Authority in Wollo, Chris
Jewell managed a small team of local and expatriate staff;
trained Ethiopian counterpart staff in the siting, construction
and testing of spring developments, hand-dug wells and boreholes;
assisted with the management of three drilling rigs provided
by the British Government Overseas Development Administration;
and worked with other visiting specialists on development
of geophysical techniques for well siting. He also provided
advice to Oxfam and other donor agencies on future material
and staff inputs.
